Collies, Collies, Collies!

I often get asked the question, "How did you get started raising collies?" I really have to credit my husband, Steve, with our adventure into the collie world. Steve spent the first 12 years of his life on a farm in south-central Kansas accompanied by the family dog, "Spot." A white collie with sable markings, Spot had a large patch of sable on his side, which obviously led to his very original name! I grew up on a ranch in southeast Kansas where herding and hunting dogs were a big part of our lives, but we never had a collie. I think my desire to have a collie of my own first began while listening to my mom read "Lassie Come Home" to my brother and I in the evenings. So, when I found an ad listing a tricolor collie, I was anxious to have her join our family on our own little farm. Myst, as we called her, quickly began watching over her little herd - our children, Matthew, Aaron, and Angela, then 5, 3 and 1. Later Myst raised our first litter of collie babies, seven tricolors and 4 sables. Raising 3 two-legged and 11 four-legged youngsters mostly in our little kitchen was quite an adventure! Saying goodbye to each one as they left for their new homes was incredibly hard - our kids had each claimed their own puppy, of course! It's hard for me to believe that it's been 20 years since our collie adventure began. What a blessing these beautiful creatures have been in our lives!
